K-9 officer Kal sniffs out thief

A property thief did a poor job covering his tracks, and as a result had the opportunity to meet one of the newest four legged members of the Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS).

The 24-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night at a residence in the South Hill area.

According to a statement from police, officers were initially called to the 300 Block of 34th St. W. for a report of suspicious activity.

After observing nothing out of place at the complainant’s property, the officers then took a look at the neighbouring residence and noticed the garage light was on.

Police then spotted feet under a vehicle inside the garage and called Police Service Dog Kal and his handler to assist with what was now a break and enter in progress.

The suspect has been charged with break and enter and breach of probation.

Kal, a three-year-old male German Shepherd, was the first of three new dogs to join the force earlier this year.

Born in Slovakia but trained at a police K-9 academy in California, Kal came to PAPS with some basic training in obedience, building searches, tracking and apprehension.
