Nanaimo Foodshare gets donation boost amid COVID-19 pandemic

NANAIMO – The Nanaimo Foodshare Society received a $25,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Nanaimo to help keep their produce fresh.

Nanaimo Foodshare Executive Director Jen Cody told NanaimoNewsNOW the gift is very important to the Society.

The Society grows produce at two farms in Nanaimo. A majority of the food grown contributes to a monthly fresh food box program for the community.

“This donation is going to enable us to increase our ability to grow, harvest and provide the food for the Good Food Box Program in a consistent way” Cody said.

The Society will also use the money to purchase a walk-in cooler for their Cline Farm location.

“The refrigeration that the $25,000 will provide is going to be critical to our ability to have some continuity with the program and to make food available for the community” Cody said.

Cody added it’s so great to see the Rotary Club and so many other organizations stepping up during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I really see the community coming together and its been so important as a food security organization to have that support and to be planning into the future around how we compare local food with emergency food responses” Cody said.

The Rotary Club of Nanaimo will be celebrating 100 years of service in the community on May 1st, 2020.
