Restrictions posing minimal disruption at Cooke

So far, so good at Cooke Municipal Golf Course since opening with COVID-19 restrictions in place on May 22.

One of the restrictions to ensure physical distancing on the course is a 12-minute gap between tee times, which led to some concern that this could limit the ability for non-pass-holders to access the course.

With these restrictions, the daily average inventory of spots for individual golfers shrunk to 200, from just shy of 350 under normal seven-minute increments. Given that there were 235 season passes sold at the time of opening, management was concerned with balancing the assignment of the limited tee times between pass holders and regular green fee play.

Darcy Myers, head professional at Cooke, explained a small adjustment they’ve made.

“Right now we are trying to hold back one tee-time an hour for green fee play, but if those go unbooked we just give them up to our pass holders,” Myers said.

So far, he said golfers have been very understanding and it hasn’t caused much of a disturbance. As is typical, there are more green fee golfers when the weather is nice, and more pass holders when conditions are poor.

As for the Rock and Iron restaurant, which is eligible to open at 50 per cent capacity Monday, Myers said it won’t be operational right away but he’s hoping they can open within a few weeks.

City Councillor Don Cody has been out to Cooke multiple times since the opening, and hasn’t seen an issue so far.

“It seemed to go along quite smooth. I know everybody was waiting their 12 minutes, that’s for sure, and I saw non-members out there, lots of them,” Cody said.

“I think the general public is pretty pleased with the way it’s going as I see it anyway. I certainly haven’t heard a complaint from a member, nor have I heard a complaint from the general population.”

He added that he suspects the restrictions will ease as the summer goes along, with the gap between tee times decreasing from 12 minutes to 10 minutes within a couple weeks.
