$3.8 million line for city’s expanding sewer needs

Construction on a $3.8 million infrastructure project is set to start this spring in Prince Albert. The new West Hill trunk sewer main is needed to take pressure off a nearby line that’s at capacity and make room for future growth in the West Hill and West Flat.

Prince Albert city council approved the tender of the project to the Saskatoon-based company, Kelsey Pipelines Ltd. at a city council meeting on April 27. At the same meeting, council voted to fund the project with money from the federal gas tax.

The existing trunk main that collects sewage from West Flat and West Hill was built in 1910 and is at 96 per cent capacity according to a city report.

“Definitely there’s an urgency to get [the new trunk main] done,” Director of Public Works Wes Hicks told paNOW.

Once it’s built, the new 1.7 km pipe will divert West Hill’s waste, leaving the existing line to serve West Flat.

“That will leave [West Flat] lots of room for growth, and then the new trunk main will be able to take the growth up the hill which includes future subdivisions and the new hospital,” Hicks explained.

Hicks said construction is expected to start shortly after May 19 and should be finished by November 30.

The digging up of 18th Street W. from 9th Avenue W. to Avenue 5A W. will also be required.

“Eighteenth Street W. will end up being closed for a significant time frame because it is a very deep trunk main,” Hicks said.

Stage two of the project, to be completed at a later date that has yet to be determined, will take the line all the way to Superstore on 15th Street E. That phase will involve the construction of 2.1 kms of new pipe.
