Raiders land Paddock ahead of trade deadline

The Prince Albert Raiders have shored up their goaltending position with the acquisition of former Memorial Cup all-star Max Paddock from the Regina Pats.

In exchange, the Raiders have sent 2002-born forward Jakob Brook, a 2020 2^nd round pick, and a conditional 2021 3^rd round pick back to Regina.

“Well we’re really excited. Max has big-game experience with the [2018] Memorial Cup, and his play actually gave them a chance to win that cup,” Raiders General Manager Curtis Hunt said.

“He’s been a consistent performer over the last two years in terms of his numbers, and we feel that he can be a stabilizing influence back there for us.”

The 2000-born goaltender has played in 29 games for the Pats this year, boasting a 0.905 save percentage while facing the fourth-most shots league wide. Over four seasons, Paddock has played in 114 games with Regina, and has compiled a goals against average (GAA) of 3.27 and a 0.901 save percentage.

At the 2018 Memorial Cup, Paddock led the host Pats to the final with a 3-1-0-0 record, 3.65 GAA, and a 0.908 save percentage. In a semi-final victory over Hamilton, the Brandon, MB native stopped 44 of 46 shots before stopping 41 of 43 in a championship loss to Acadie Bathurst.

“He’s played very well this year, he’s healthy right now, and we’re excited to get him. Really, this should put some questions around that position to bed and we can move forward and get back to the form we were at in November.”

In his second year with the Raiders, Jakob Brook had produced nine points through 38 games played. As a 16-year-old rookie, the Roblin, MB native scored six times, adding six assists in 61 games played. Brook also had two assists in 23 playoff games with Prince Albert.

“Brooksy, he’s just an incredibly good kid. Obviously skates so well, can get in and pressure D so well,” Hunt said.

The general manager added Brook will have the opportunity to see more minutes and play a larger role in Regina and thanked him for his contributions to last year’s championship season and this year as well.

“We’re very appreciative and we wish him the best of luck except for when he’s here at the Art Hauser, flying up and down the wing.”

In a corresponding move, the Raiders have re-assigned goaltender Keegan Karki.

Karki was acquired from the Everett Silvertips for a fourth-round pick on Friday night, and appeared in three games with Prince Albert.

Hunt thanked the goaltender for coming in and wished him the best moving forward.

The Western Hockey League trade deadline is coming up tomorrow at 4 p.m.
