Sep 18, 2017 | 1:42 PM

Over the weekend, Police Service Dog Daxa proved she is the best in the country when it comes to tracking after finishing first at the 2017 National Championship Canine Trials.

The event took place in Edmonton over the weekend with participation from 42 canine teams from 14 agencies across Canada. Daxa and her handler Constable Bighetty competed in all the weekend’s events.

“It shows she’s an awesome tracking dog and it just shows she’s one of the best and she’s proven it,” Bighetty was quoted as saying in a release. “Pretty proud of Daxa, we owe it to dedication, teamwork and the bond we have.”

Three years ago the pair came in fourth place and last year, placed second.

Over the three-day competition, the teams competed in tracking, searching buildings and compounds, searching for evidence as well as detecting drugs and explosives events. They also participated in criminal takedowns and displays of obedience.

Cst. Bighetty is especially proud of winning first in the tracking event as he says, amongst handlers, it is one of the most distinguished profiles to win.
