Sports Year in Review; Zach Cook Memorial debut a huge success
The debut of the Zach Cook Memorial Tournament starting up this year makes our Top Sports Stories for 2019.
Zach Cook loved slo-pitch so much, he played games right after getting chemotherapy treatments. So when Cook eventually lost his battle to cancer in 2017, his parents Donna and Jim decided to throw a slo-pitch tournament to honour him. The first one was held on July 13 at Lakeland Ford Park and raised $3,000 to Childhood Cancer Canada.
The two teams that made it to the finals happened to be the two clubs Zach played on, the Nitro Donkeys and the Dr. Nitros.
Cook was diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumour (DSRCT), an incredibly rare cancer without a dedicated treatment plan or a cure.
