One of the world’s biggest musical plays made its debut last night at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre For The Arts as the production Mamma Mia! is now in our backyard.

The event is presented by Broadway North Theatre Company. Assistant director of the show, and the marketing and events coordinator for E.A. Rawlinson Centre, Cara Stelmaschuk, said opening night was a success.

“We knew it would be a crowd pleaser, it’s all feel good and we knew people would love it,” she told paNOW.

The process to prepare for a play of this magnitude has been months in the making. With auditions back in April and their first sit down meeting as a cast in May, cast members can enjoy the applause.

“It’s been a few months and yet at the same time we stop and go ‘Wow how did we get here already?’” Stelmaschuk said.

The classical story is a of a woman in search of her biological father with music from musical group ABBA.

The production features 32 performers who are all from Prince Albert.

“Live theatre has a really interesting way of bringing people together,” she said. “We always say as performers on stage that every show feels different because each group brings something different to the crowd.”

“Each audience is a little bit different from the last, so every performance because of that is completely unique,” Stelmaschuk explained.

The show will be going tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Three more stagings are set for next week on Thursday and Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s shows are at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

“We’re definitely seeing an increase in ticket sales because of last night,” Stelmaschuk said. “Last night we had probably 10 seats left once the curtains went up, so we did really well for opening night.”
