conditional discharge

Communication at centre of Prince Albert taxi assault case

Oct 7, 2026 | 11:32 AM

A former Prince Albert resident received a one-year conditional discharge after pleading guilty to assault following an incident involving a passenger in his taxi.

Dalit Singh, 30, was driving a taxi taking a local woman home on Nov. 21, 2025, at about 2:30 a.m. after she had been out socializing with friends.

Video from inside the taxi showed both the driver and passenger using normal body language while the trip continued, until a three-minute gap in the footage, according to verbal submissions from the Crown prosecutor.

After the gap, both became more tense and Singh attempted to grab the woman’s phone after she began recording him.

While reaching for the phone, Singh grabbed the woman’s arm, leading to the assault charge.

His lawyer said the incident was the result of miscommunication caused by language and cultural barriers. Singh was upset that she was recording him, which is why he tried to take the phone.

Through his lawyer, Singh apologized and said he accepted that he should have called police rather than attempting to deal with the situation himself.

He did get the phone, but then pulled the taxi over, called a replacement driver and returned the woman’s phone to her.

Singh has permanent resident status in Canada and has not previously been involved in the criminal justice system. He apologized through his lawyer.

Following a joint submission from Crown and defence, Singh was given a one-year conditional discharge and 20 hours of community service. During the discharge period, he must remain in his residence between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. unless he is working.

In her submissions, the Crown prosecutor said the victim, who had been in court but left, knew about the discharge, was fine with it and was glad she did not have to testify.
