57 years later, Bobby Bird’s journey home finally completed
Going back to 1969, 10-year-old Robert ‘Bobby’ Bird had been taken from his family and placed in the Timber Bay Children’s Home, a facility not formally recognized as a residential school, although that status is disputed.
It was the beginning of October when Bird, along with two friends, left the facility and tried make the about 127 km walk back home. Bird’s two friends turned back and went back to the children’s home, but Bird continued on until he was lost and eventually passed away.
“The story goes when he left, the administrator, the principal at the school, did not go look for him that night or the next day,” said Teron Roberts, one of the two co-organizers of the walk.
“For whatever reason, he assumed he made it to La Ronge, and then the administrator went to La Ronge to check the family cabin to pick him up to bring him back. He spoke with the grandparents at the cabin and asked them where Bobby was, and they said, ‘what do you mean? You took him two months ago’.”
