Inquest set into death of man in Prince Albert police cell

A public inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the death of 33-year-old Saul Laliberte in a Prince Albert Police Service cell nearly five years ago. 

An inquest will be held Oct. 26 to 30 at the Coronet Hotel. 

Laliberte was being held in cells on Nov. 7, 2021, when he was found unresponsive. Emergency medical services were called. Despite life-saving efforts by paramedics, Laliberte was pronounced dead after being taken to Victoria Hospital. 

A member of the Prince Albert Police Service was charged with failing to provide the necessities of life, but the charge was stayed.

Provincial legislation requires an inquest into the death of a person in custody unless the coroner is satisfied the death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.

An inquest establishes who died, when and where the death occurred, and the medical cause and manner of death. A six-member jury will hear testimony from witnesses and other involved parties. The jury may make recommendations to help prevent similar deaths. 

Coroner Frederick Kovach will preside.
