Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) is mourning the loss of a former chief and senator.

Roy Head passed away on June 29 at the age of 70.

Head served as chief of Red Earth Cree Nation from 1996 to 1999, and councillor from 1980 to 1996.

He later served as a PAGC senator.

According to a statement provided by PAGC, he was known as a respected leader, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather whose service extended beyond his home community to First Nations across northern Saskatchewan.

The PAGC also stated Head devoted much of his life to his family, his Nation and the people of the North. His leadership was marked by kindness, wisdom, humour and a deep commitment to strengthening First Nations communities.

“Senator Roy Head was a respected leader and a strong supporter of the Prince Albert Grand Council and our member First Nations,” said Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte. “His dedication to his people, his humour and his steady leadership will be remembered with deep respect. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sandra, the Head family and Red Earth Cree Nation.”

A funeral service for Head will be held Saturday, July 4, at 11 a.m. at the Red Earth Cree Nation School Gymnasium.
