Local teams seeking hardware during softball provincials

A handful of local softball teams are playing for all the marbles this weekend as provincial championship season has arrived.

Five teams from Prince Albert are set to begin their journeys to provincial gold, with two of those tournaments happening at Prime Minister’s Park in PA. That tournament is being hosted by the U15 Astros and features two other teams in the Rosebud Royals and Parkland Wildcats.

Each team will play against each other once on Saturday, with the Astros playing Rosebud at 10 a.m. and Parkland at 6 p.m. The team that wins both of their games will advance straight to the gold medal game at 2 p.m. on Sunday, while second and third place will play at 10 a.m. to see who advances to play for gold and who takes provincial bronze. All games will be played at Rotary Field.

That is the only Astros team in action this weekend as the others are slated to hit the field next weekend, July 10-12. The U13’s will be heading to Shell Lake, while the U17’s and U20’s will be in Prince Albert at Prime Minister’s Park.

The other tournament happening in Prince Albert this weekend includes the U15 Aces and 13 other teams from across the province.

The Aces helped kick off the ‘A’ provincial championship on Friday morning at 8 a.m., where they dropped a 14-2 decision to the Saskatoon Selects Surge at Kinsmen Field. They have two other games to play yet on Friday, with their next contest at 2 p.m. versus the Yorkton Crush before ending the slate with an 8:30 p.m. date with the Regina Royals Reign.

The Aces then have one more round robin contest on Saturday against the East Central Wolverines at 2:30 p.m. before playoffs on Sunday. First pitch for the gold medal game is set for 3 p.m. at Kinsmen Field.

Other Aces teams embarking on provincial runs on Friday include the U11 ‘A’ team in Saskatoon, the U11 ‘B’ team in Warman, and the U17 ‘A’ team in Saskatoon. Teams competing next weekend include the U13 ‘A’ Aces in Regina, the U13 ‘B’ Aces in Saskatoon, and U15 ‘B’ Aces in Saskatoon. Meanwhile, the U17 ‘B’ Rosthern Valley Vipers girls’ team is headed to Swift Current from July 17-19.
