PJHL schedule released as Moosomin ceases operations, dispersal draft set for Wednesday

Jun 16, 2026 | 5:20 PM

The Prince Albert Timberjaks will have one less team to worry about this upcoming Prairie Junior Hockey League (PJHL) season.

This after the Moosomin Steelhawks ceased operations in the league after just one season.

The announcement was made on Monday across the team’s social media accounts, saying the franchise is exploring other leagues to play in and hopes to be back on the ice for the 2027/28 season.

Timberjaks head coach and general manager Stef Corfmat said it’s a blow to the league.

“It would have been nice if Moosomin stuck it out, just because it was nice having a balanced [league]. Unless you’re dedicated and you want to make it happen, it’s easy to fail.”

Corfmat also credited the decision to a lack of local players on the Steelhawks last season.

According to the team’s lineup card from their last PJHL game on Feb. 23, 2026, only two players hailed from Moosomin while the others came from other parts of the province or even abroad, including three from Manitoba, one each from Quebec and B.C., and one from Mexico.

The PJHL also released a statement regarding the Steelhawks departure, saying a dispersal draft for their players will be “held shortly”. That day was confirmed to be Wednesday, where each team will pick in two rounds in a snake draft type format. The Jaks will pick fourth in round one and eighth in round two.

Additionally, the schedule for the upcoming 2026/27 season was released, which sees the Timberjaks play in the first game of the regular season against the Royals in Saskatoon on Sept. 23. They’ll then rematch the Royals in their home opener later that week, set for Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Regional Rec Centre (NRRC).

As usual, the club will take a few trips down south over the year to face off with each of the five teams in the Bill Johnston (South) Division for a game in their barn, while they’ll return the favour for a visit to the NRRC at some point in their schedule.

“We’re pretty happy with our schedule. You wish you could have a perfect schedule, but it never works out like that. Some months you play more, some months you play less.”

Corfmat added that the Jaks are also planning to honour one of club’s integral members in Mark Odnokon, though details are still in the works. Odnokon passed away last month after a brief battle with cancer and helped bring the Timberjaks to reality, serving as their Director of Player Personnel once the franchise was established.
