A tragic story is unfolding in central Saskatchewan.

Almost one month after a young child’s death at Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation, a 67-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failing to provide the necessities of life and abandoning a child.

She made her first court appearance Thursday in Saskatoon and is scheduled to return to court next week in Rosthern.

On May 10, RCMP responded to a report of a child in medical distress.

EMS also attended to the residence and declared the child, who was under the age of 12, deceased at the scene.

“We are not releasing the name of the child or accused in the event a publication ban is ordered, and to protect the identity of the child, ” the RCMP said in a statement. “We will not be providing additional information that may lead to the identification of the child.”

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Team, Saskatoon Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team, and Prince Albert and Battlefords Serious Crimes Units assisted with this investigation.
