Beef cattle traceability task force established

Jun 9, 2026 | 3:40 PM

A group of livestock organizations is working together to examine the benefits and drawbacks of beef cattle traceability.

The Canadian Cattle Association, National Cattle Feeders’ Association and Canadian Beef Breeds Council say the Traceability Task Force was created to support disease and emergency preparedness and response for beef cattle.

The task force’s mandate is to define the outcomes a traceability system must meet to protect the industry and serve producers, then propose a clear, practical framework for beef cattle that meets those outcomes. It will consider whether those outcomes are best achieved through regulatory requirements, an industry-led approach or a combination of both.

The group’s recommendation is expected to outline a clear industry policy position on traceability and provide a plan for industry and government, including its purpose, scope, success factors and an industry-led implementation roadmap.

NCFA chair Brad Deleeuw said strengthening traceability across Canada’s beef supply chain is critical to supporting a rapid response in the event of a disease outbreak or emergency, while maintaining market access and confidence in Canadian beef.

“Through the Traceability Task Force, we have an opportunity to develop producer-led recommendations that are practical and cost-effective, while ensuring any improvements are beneficial for the entire beef sector,” Deleeuw said.

Members, jointly appointed by the CCA, NCFA and CBBC, are actively involved in the Canadian beef industry and collectively represent the entire beef cattle supply chain, from cow-calf and seedstock producers to backgrounders and feedlots.

Each member will act in an independent capacity, not on behalf of any organization they may work for or be affiliated with. The task force includes:

Matthew Atkinson, MB

John Vaags, MB

Aden Culberson, NB

Brianna Elliot, AB

Keith Gregory, AB

Chad Meunier, AB

Alex Kulchar, BC

Ken Schaus, ON

Matt Bowman, ON

David Sibbald, AB

Jeff Smith, AB

Bree Kelln, SK

Ryan Thompson, SK

Jeff Yorga, SK

CCA, NCFA, and CBBC will share updates as the task force reaches milestones throughout the process.
