Prince Albert under rainfall and smoke warning; chuckwagons cancelled

Aug 8, 2025 | 9:21 AM

UPDATE: The Exhibition Association has confirmed that the chuckwagon and chariot races will not happen on Friday due to the heavy rainfall.

The beef and cattle shows will continue and they are attempting to run the 4-H events.

The rides will go ahead, as of 1:20 pm.

Gate admission has been changed for Friday only to $5 for people age 13 and up. Those 12 and younger will get in free as long as they are with an adult.

It might be smoky rain or rainy smoke, but people in Prince Albert are dealing with two weather warnings this morning.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning around 8 am on Friday, saying that a low-pressure system is moving across Saskatchewan, coming from the south.

“Heavy, persistent rainfall will occur on the northern side of this system as it pivots through central Saskatchewan tonight and Saturday. Total rainfall amounts of 50 to 75 mm are expected by the time the rain ends Sunday morning.”

Localized flooding is already being seen at some low-level spots in the city. At the same time, hail, wind and lightning could make outdoor activities unsafe.

The Prince Albert Exhibition Society says it will be deciding soon whether the chuckwagon races will proceed today, and the horse events will run once the thunder and lightning have stopped.

As far as rides go, they will continue if the operator feels it is safe to do so.

The public is being advised to drive carefully and watch for tail lights ahead, and be prepared to stop. The rainfall warning is continuing east and a warning was issued in Nipawin and Melfort yesterday.

That is not deterring anglers in the Premier’s Walleye Cup, as boats headed out this morning.

The annual fishing tournament wraps up on August 9, around the same time as the rain ends.

At the same time, a smoke advisory is also covering much of northern Saskatchewan, including Prince Albert.

That smoke is coming from the millions of acres of forest fires across the northern part of the province right now.

The public is being advised to monitor emergency alerts and check social media for changes to scheduled events.
