Raiders start Alberta road swing in Lethbridge with new face at the helm

Mar 12, 2025 | 1:00 PM

The last time the Prince Albert Raiders played the Lethbridge Hurricanes, the Raiders had won five of their last six games, were first in the East Division, and had Jeff Truitt standing on the bench. As the Raiders get ready for Wednesday’s matchup, the Raiders are now second in the East Division, have only won one of their last six, and will now have Interim Head Coach Ryan McDonald calling the shots.

Entering Wednesday, the Raiders sit sixth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 34-22-5-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) on the year, while the Hurricanes have climbed to third in both the Conference and the Central Division. Their record sits at 36-19-2-1.

This is the last matchup of the season between the Raiders and the Hurricanes. The last time they played, the Raiders had a 1-0 on home ice well into the third period before the Hurricanes scored to take it to overtime, and then again in overtime to beat the Raiders 2-1 on February 26. The other two matchups saw the Raiders win the first back on Nov. 3 in Prince Albert 3-2, and the Raiders were trampled 6-1 in Lethbridge on Feb. 7.

The Raiders only have one win in their last six games, a 4-3 shootout win over Regina. The other six games saw a 4-1 loss to Saskatoon most recently, and then close losses 3-2 to Saskatoon, 4-3 in overtime against Swift Current, 5-4 to Edmonton, and finally that 2-1 loss in overtime to Lethbridge that started this slide.

On the other hand, the Hurricanes are coming off of a 3-1 win on Friday at home against Brandon. The Hurricanes are on a three-game winning streak with 7-4 and 5-1 wins over Kelowna and Regina. Brandon was also the last team to beat Lethbridge 4-3 in overtime. The Hurricanes have not lost in regulation in their last seven games.

In goal scoring, the Raiders are up to 232 goals for this year but have also allowed 213, good for a +19 differential. The Raiders goals per game average has dropped down to 3.7 goals per game.

On the other hand, the Hurricanes have scored the least amount of goals out of any team with a playoff spot locked up with 210 goals for, but they’ve also allowed the second least amount of goals against at 175. That works out to a +35 differential and an average of 3.3 goals per game.

Although not as much as earlier this year, the Raiders powerplay is still finding success as the second-best in the league at 28.3 per cent. The penalty kill has dropped back down to the third last spot with 72.7 per cent.

For the Hurricanes special teams, their powerplay is eighth in the league at 25.4 per cent. Their penalty kill is the third-best in the league while operating at 81.9 per cent.

Tomas Mrsic still leads the Raiders with 32G-51A-83P, but in league scoring he’s dropped down to 11th. Aiden Oiring has dropped out of the top 20 in league scoring with 24G-51A-75P. Lukas Dragicevic is third in scoring for both the Raiders and league-wide amongst defencemen with 16G-51A-67P on the year.

With only one goal scored in their last game, the Raiders still have two active point streaks from unlikely sources. Oli Chenier has 1G-1A in his last two games, and Linden Burrett has points in consecutive games for the first time in his career with 0G-2A in the last two games.

Leading the Hurricanes in scoring is Brayden Yager who sits right ahead of Oiring tied for 19th in league scoring with 25G-52A-77P. Brayden Edwards sits second with 29G-42A-71P, and Logan Wormald is third with 29G-34A-63P.

The longest Hurricanes streak belongs to Yager with 2G-4A in his last five games. In the last four games, Edwards has 4G-0A and Leo Braillard has 2G-4A in the last four games. Wormald has been hot lately with 1G-5A in his last three games. In the last two games, Luke Cozens has 0g-3A and Caden Price has 2G-2A.

In goal, Max Hildebrand’s save percentage of 0.917 is now second in the league, and with a record of 29-15-5-0, he sits third in league wins. Backing up is Dimitri Fortin with a save percentage at 0.886 and a record of 6-7-0-1 on the year.

For the Hurricanes goaltenders, Jackson Unger is up to 0.900 on the year with a record of 24-17-4-2. Koen Cleaver is their backup with a 0.902 save percentage and a record of 12-8-0-0 on the year.

The Raiders and the Hurricanes get set to take each other on for the fourth and final time this season in Lethbridge at 7 p.m. The pregame show on 900 CKBI begins at 6:30 p.m.
