Inquest dates set

Inquest into death of woman at Pine Grove set for April

Mar 7, 2025 | 9:50 AM

An inquest into how a 25-year-old woman passed away at Pine Grove Correctional Centre will happen next month.

Rayleen Angus Besic died after being found unconscious in her cell on April 15, 2022.

EMS and staff attempted life-saving efforts and she was taken to Victoria Hospital but was pronounced dead just before 11 a.m.

The inquest will start on April 7 and continue until the 11th, although they frequently do not take the full five days allowed. It will be held at the Coronet Hotel.

The Coroner’s Act says that inquests are required into the deaths of people who die in custody unless they are satisfied that the cause was entirely due to natural causes and not preventable.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.

Coroner Brent Gough, K.C. will preside at the inquest.
