Timberjaks, Chiefs going to series-deciding Game 3 Wednesday

The opening round playoff series between the Prince Albert Timberjaks and Delisle Chiefs is going to a winner-take-all finale.

Both teams traded blows this weekend in the best-of-three Prairie Junior Hockey League (PJHL) matchup, with Prince Albert taking the first game 2-1 in overtime on Friday and Delisle answering back with a 4-2 win on Saturday.

With the Chiefs tying the series up at one, Timberjaks Head Coach and General Manager Steph Corfmat shared his opinion on his team’s performance in Game 2.

“I thought we played pretty good in the first two periods, the third period… they just came out flying and we just never kept up. Besides that, I thought the guys played pretty good and we just got to capitalize on our chances.”

Penalties were also a killer for P.A. on Saturday as they took nine trips to the box compared to the four penalties they took in Game 1.

“[Game 1] we took the body and capitalized on our chances,” Corfmat explained. “Today, didn’t really get the bounces and ended up in the box more, and if you end up in the penalty box against this team, you’re going to lose.”

Despite tempers flaring towards the end of Game 2, one person who stayed cool and collected throughout was P.A. netminder Brayden Lyons.

The second-year Timberjaks puck-stopper has faced a whopping 123 shots in the first two games of the series while allowing just six goals, good enough for a 2.38 GAA and a playoff leading .959 SV%.

“He loves to compete, and he’ll do anything to win. Can’t ask for much better,” said Corfmat.

Now heading back to Delisle on Wednesday for the series finale, he added that the game plan isn’t switching up.

“We just got to play like we can play and score the chances that come.”

Puck drop for Game 3 is set for 8 p.m. at the Delisle Centennial Arena.
