Darren Solomon will seek re-election for Ward 8

One person has confirmed their intention to run in Prince Albert’s Ward 8 in the upcoming general municipal election.

Darren Solomon, who first took the seat in a by-election on May 31 of last year, hopes to be back on council this fall.

“When I was elected just over a year ago, I was excited to be given the opportunity to be a part of the developments happening in Prince Albert and that hasn’t changed,” said Solomon in an e-mailed news release.

Solomon’s West Hill ward is one of the busiest in the city with new development.

Currently under construction are the addition to the Victoria Hospital, the Métis Nation –Saskatchewan’s new service centre plus a plan to develop tiny homes nearby and three new apartment buildings.

Solomon said that other developments, like the new arena/aquatic centre and nearby businesses in the Yard District are all good for the city.

“Outside of the immediate economic spin offs of these developments the biggest benefit is the potential to attract industry to Prince Albert,” he said.

He said he is committed to working with residents of his ward and across the city and is not blind to the city’s challenges.

“Although aging infrastructure, affordable housing, downtown revitalization are common topics of discussion the effect of crime remains the most common and was the focus of the community meeting I held in May. We need to continue to work together with other levels of government in addressing homelessness, addictions and mental health to improve community safety,” he said.

Solomon pointed to his volunteerism in the community and time with the Prince Albert Kinsmen and Telemiracle as evidence of his commitment to the city.

He works as Director of Education for the Sturgeon Lake Education Alliance and has four adult children with his wife Nicole. They also have five grandchildren and are season ticket holders for the Prince Albert Raiders and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Both are strong supporters of local arts and play a variety of sports in their down time.

In Ward 6, incumbent Blake Edwards will run again as will fellow councillor Dawn Kilmer in Ward 7. Tony Head, incumbent in Ward 3 is also hoping to be back in his seat in the fall.

Two names have declared for the mayor’s chair, incumbent Greg Dionne and Bill Powalinsky.

Don Cody is looking to retire from politics and will not put his name on the Ward four ballot. Brent Zbaraschuk has said he hopes to win that seat.

The next elections for cities and towns in Saskatchewan is November 13, 2024
