Okemow murder case committed for trial

Jun 26, 2024 | 8:00 AM

A preliminary inquiry hearing at Prince Albert Provincial Court has determined that a man charged with second degree murder, will stand trial on the exact same charge.

Wesley Naytowhow’s case was discussed on Tuesday, and will now proceed to a pre-trial hearing at Court of King’s Bench.

No dates have been set but will likely be heard in the coming months.

On August 21, 2023, RCMP responded to a report of an unresponsive man in Emma Lake. They found Philip Okemow’s body in an outdoor location at MacIntosh Point. Naytowhow was arrested last November and a not guilty plea followed in March.

The relationship between the two men is unclear at this time, beyond the fact they are both from Sturgeon Lake First Nation.

A total of three days had been set aside for the preliminary inquiry hearing, but only two were needed. The evidence heard and the judge’s reason for committal, are subject to a publication ban.
