Accused in Shellbrook-area homicide case receives seven year prison sentence

One of six men charged in the death of Wesley Custer has received a sentence of seven years.

Kyle Standing appeared Friday at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert and entered a guilty plea to manslaughter.

With credit for time spent in remand, he has a little less than six years left to serve. Upon his release from custody, he will be prohibited for life from owning or possessing and firearms, ammunition or explosives.

Due to the fact one of the co-accused in the case, Tyson Lachance, tentatively has a jury trial scheduled for June, none of the evidence heard during Friday’s hearing or the Justice’s reason for the sentence, can be published.

Wesley Custer was 20 years old when he was dropped off at the Shellbrook Hospital on Aug. 21, 2020, with serious injuries. He died shortly after.

Lachance’s jury trial has been scheduled to run from June 10 to June 28 at Court of King’s Bench. He is accused of second degree murder.

Evan Ledoux, who was initially charged with manslaughter, and later had his charge upgraded to first-degree murder, will have his matter spoken to on Jan. 29 during a preliminary inquiry hearing at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Curtis Ledoux was previously convicted on a charge of being an accessory after the fact to manslaughter and received a sentence of 253 days.

Brian Dreaver and Matthew Whitstone were charged with murder in the case and had their matters stayed earlier this month at provincial court.

Police have not divulged what the motive may have been for Custer’s death, but family disclosed their belief it was gang related.
