AGE LIMIT GOING UP

Province to officially raise age limit on tobacco purchases on Feb. 1

Jan 25, 2024 | 10:21 AM

The province has set a date for when changes to the age requirements for tobacco and vape purchases will come into effect.

As of Feb. 1, the province will raise the minimum age for these purchases from 18 to 19 years old.

Last fall, the Sask. Party government passed legislation calling for the age limit to increase.

The change aligns age restrictions for smoking and vaping with those on liquor and cannabis sales in Saskatchewan, something that has been done in most provinces.

“It is important for us to protect Saskatchewan youth from the dangers of tobacco and vapour products,” Health Minister Everett Hindley said. “These products have no place in Saskatchewan schools, and I’m pleased that MLAs on both sides of the house voted unanimously to take the necessary steps to protect students from being exposed to these products.”

Last fall, the Ministry of Health consulted with external stakeholders, including tobacco and vapour product retailers, tobacco, and vapour product manufacturers, health advocacy organizations, and First Nations and Métis groups in developing the bill.

Retailers are now responsible for ensuring they only sell these items to people 19 years and older and they have to update signs to show the new minimum age.
