A Sandy Bay woman who stole two vehicles on separate occasions over the last year and whom police talked out of a West Flat home will spend her one year of jail in the community.

Angela Ahenakew was sentenced in Prince Albert Provincial Court this afternoon after entering guilty pleas to the theft charges and to breaching terms of a conditional sentence order.

It was almost one year ago that Ahenakew was invited to a home on McArthur Drive for drinks but in the morning when the victim woke up, both of his car keys, his wallet and his vehicle were missing.

The vehicle contained his .22 rifle and some bullets as well.

Ahenakew used the tap function on one of the cards at a gas station which triggered an alert and response from a member of the Prince Albert Police Service.

The constable obtained video footage from the gas station which showed Ahenakew driving up in the stolen vehicle and then using the card.

The officer then drove around and spotted the vehicle parked at a home on 18th Street West. Investigation of the stolen Hyundai showed no evidence of the rifle in the back and at the same time, he noticed four males go into the back door of the house.

The officer then called for backup and surveillance of the home began. According to reports at the time, 11 people left the house and police were left to deal with Ahenakew barricaded inside the home.

After several hours, she surrendered and when police went inside the house, they found the .22 rifle, a zip gun, the ammunition and two key fobs for the stolen Hyundai.

The zip gun is a prohibited weapon and will be destroyed.

Six months later, police were once again called to a report of a stolen vehicle, this time at the South Hill Medical Centre.

The victim of the theft worked inside and found her vehicle gone when she went to leave at the end of the day on June 2.

However, the owner of the vehicle could track it using her phone and showed officers where it was located. At the same time, police looked at video surveillance from the Husky convenience store.

When the vehicle owner and her co-workers were shown the video, one of them recognized Ahenakew who had been in the clinic that day.

She had gone into the staff area and taken keys from a locker. The Chev Equinox was found parked and locked at a home in Prince Albert.

In a joint submission, both the Crown and defence lawyers asked Judge Daunt for a 12 month conditional sentence, to be served in the community.

Considering that despite violating her conditions earlier, Ahenakew was not accused of any further breaches in the most recent five months, Daunt agreed.

As she has been doing, Ahenakew will keep her electronic monitoring bracelet on for the next 12 months and must also complete 50 hours of community service. Breaching any of her conditions means she will be incarcerated and no longer able to stay in her community.

When asked, she said she was sorry for her actions.
