Sask East Oilers topple Timberwolves to claim gold in Ron Gunville Memorial final

Nov 12, 2023 | 6:14 PM

The Lake Country Timberwolves came up short at the third annual Ron Gunville Memorial Tournament this past weekend, falling to the Sask East Oilers 6-3 in the gold medal game on Sunday afternoon.

The Timberwolves entered the third period trailing 3-2 before quickly falling behind 4-2 at the start of the final frame. L.C. would get one back though a short time later but that is as close as they would get. The Oilers would go on to score twice more in the last ten minutes to put the game out of hand and capture the championship.

Head coach for the Timberwolves Derek Simonson said although it wasn’t the result they were after, he’s still proud of the group for their effort over the course of the weekend.

“We didn’t win the one that we wanted to, but we won three games this weekend,” he said. “We’re going to build off of that. We talk about how many good things we did over the weekend and the guys should be proud – hold their heads high. A little disappointed, but we did a lot of good things this weekend and that’s going to help us out throughout the season.”

Lake Country entered the finals having gone undefeated in the round-robin, going a perfect 3-0. In those games, the Timberwolves defeated the Humboldt Broncos 7-4 in their first game on Friday morning before downing the Martensville Marauders 4-2 later that same day. During their lone game on Saturday, L.C. defeated the Parkland Elks 5-2 to advance to the finals.

The Oilers had a similar path to the finals, thrashing the River East Marauders from Winnipeg 14-0 in their first game before winning their next two games in overtime against both Humboldt and Parkland.

In the bronze medal game, Humboldt defeated Parkland 5-2 to capture the third spot on the podium.

The Timberwolves are back on the ice in league action on Wednesday night when they welcome the Saskatoon Crunch to Kinsmen Arena. Puck drop is slated for 8:15 p.m.
