WHL making neck protection mandatory following death of former NHLer

The Western Hockey League (WHL) is making neck guards mandatory for all players.

The league made the announcement on Wednesday, four days after former NHL player Adam Johnson passed away when his neck was cut by a skate during a game in England.

They now join the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) who already have their own rule.

The new policy for the WHL comes into effect on Nov. 3 or as soon as proper equipment becomes available to all clubs. They’re expecting it may take time for some to get guards from licensed suppliers due to increased demand following Johnson’s death.

Players will also be required to wear neck guards during practices.

Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League still plans on discussing the idea of making the equipment mandatory at its upcoming coaches’ meeting later this month and its Board of Directors meeting in January.
