‘You don’t want to see your kids where you are standing,’ P.A. judge tells convicted robber

Upon receiving a 16-month sentence for robbery, a Prince Albert man was instructed by a judge to be a better role model for his two young children.

Joshua Goodvoice, 23, was sentenced on Monday at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

The robbery occurred in the city on July, 2022. Goodvoice entered a west flat convenience store and after pushing the clerk aside, proceeded to take a handful of small bills from the till, along with lottery tickets.

While Goodvoice made no direct threat with a weapon, the clerk did see he had a knife stuffed into his belt, and pushed the store’s panic button to alert police.

At the time of the incident, Goodvoice wore a mask, however was identified days later as he was wearing the same clothes used during the offence.

In addition to the robbery, Goodvoice also entered guilty pleas for a stolen vehicle in the Shellbrook area, as well as a weapons complaint in Saskatoon in which was caught carrying a homemade conductive energy device and a knife.

With all his charges combined, Goodvoice’s total sentence works out to be about 19 months however with credit for time spent in remand custody, he was released on Monday and is now serving 12 months probation.

The conditions include assessment for addiction and not to possess any weapons.

Goodvoice’s lawyer Evan Strelioff noted that at the time of the offence, Goodvoice was living in Prince Albert, had fallen in with bad people and struggled with meth, morphine and fentanyl addictions.

Upon his release from custody, Goodvoice plans to go to Edmonton and work in the home construction industry. He also stressed a desire to support his young children.

While acknowledging Goodvoice’s family support and the length of his sobriety, Judge Healey also said the offences raised serious concerns. He asked Goodvoice to try and imagine what the store clerk experienced.

“There’s too much of that going on in Prince Albert,” he said.

Healey also cautioned Goodvoice that if he were to ever show up in court with weapons offences, he would face prison time. He further encouraged Goodvoice to be a role model for his children.

“You don’t want to see your kids where you are standing,” he said.
