Robbery and flight from police charges result in 5.5 year sentence

A man responsible for a series of violent events last fall has received a prison sentence of 5.5 years.

Joshua Naytowhow appeared in person when the matter was spoken to Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Guilty pleas were entered last October to evading police, and resisting arrest. Following a trial in March for a separate matter, Naytowhow was found guilty of robbery.

The case dates back to last October, when RCMP were called to Sturgeon Lake First Nation for a report of a stolen truck.

It was believed at the time the same suspect might be responsible for some robberies and an attempted robbery at Christopher Lake the day before. Following a search of the community, officers spotted the stolen truck and deployed a spike belt to stop it.

The driver then ran away into a nearby field where he was found hours later, with the help of the Prince Albert Police dog service.

Naytowhow, who is from Sturgeon Lake and was 30 years old at the time of his arrest, originally faced nine charges including resisting arrest, robbery with a firearm, uttering threats, assault with a weapon, and operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer.

The remaining charges have been withdrawn by the Crown.

Naytowhow received 329 days credit for time spent in remand.

Following his release from custody, he will be subject to a two year driving ban and a 10 year prohibition from owning or possessing any firearms or explosives.
