Four inductees named to the Prince Albert Arts Hall of Fame

An award-winning musician, a longtime volunteer and two special teachers are being inducted into the Prince Albert Arts Hall of Fame.

The inductees were announced by the Prince Albert Arts Board on Wednesday and include Donny Parenteau, Robert and Lorna Gibson and a posthumous honour for Geoff Payton.

Payton, who passed away in December 2020 was an avid photographer and pursued that field for more than 40 years.

He provided beginner and advanced classes in camera use for over 25 years and gave presentations to various groups. Payton was also the President of the Northern Image Photographer (NIP) Club which he helped form in 1992.

NIP members have taken photographs for many events including the Cancer Society Relay for Life and The Summit Run.

Lorna Gibson has taught theory and piano from her home studio since 1962. Until 2019, Lorna was a member of the Prince Albert Registered Music Teachers’ Association and has also served a two-year term on the provincial board. She was a member of the Prince Albert Music Festival executive and served as the scholarship convenor for many years.

Currently, she is the accompanist for the Prince Albert Concert Choir and won the YWCA Woman of Distinction award for Arts and Culture in 1998 and a Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee medal last year.

Her husband Robert Gibson has an elaborate history in the music scene which includes Diplomas and Degrees in music and music education from England and Saskatchewan.

He taught band and choir at various schools and retired from Carlton Comprehensive High School in 1997 and received a lifetime membership for the Saskatchewan Music Educators Association in 2003 and the Distinguished band director award from the Saskatchewan Band Association in 2006. In 2015, he received the Prince Albert Award of Merit.

Donny Parenteau, a longtime Prince Albert musician has over 100 nominations for seven major award shows including three JUNO nominations and his first USA nomination for Best Country CD at the 2014 Native American Music Awards.

Parenteau spent 12 years touring with Neal McCoy and played on numerous shows along with performances on The Grand Ole Opry and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Alongside McCoy, Donny has shared the stage with country artists such as Charlie Daniels, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Shania Twain and Reba McEntire.

The Prince Albert Arts Hall of Fame Induction Gala will take place on Sept. 29 at the EA Rawlinson Centre.
