Excitement building as Northern Bears set to host Esso Cup after three-year postponement
What was supposed to happen in 2020 is now becoming a reality three years later for a local hockey team.
On Sunday afternoon, the puck will finally drop inside the Art Hauser Centre to kick off the long-awaited and overdue Esso Cup in Prince Albert. After the extended wait, Esso Cup chair Robin Wildey said that it was nice to see everything finally come together.
“It’s awesome,” he said. “The teams are coming in by the end of the week, volunteers are all in place, it’s a nice feeling knowing that something we back started in 2020 is finally going to happen in 2023. It’s a good feeling, we’re excited, the committees excited, I’m excited, we’re just ready to put the puck down.”
Six teams are set to compete in the tournament from across the country, all of whom have had very different paths to get to this point. Some familiar teams are back in the running for the National Championship, including the Northern Bears who were invited to the Esso Cup last year as the hosts in Okotoks, Alta.
