Broadway North Theatre Company opens casting for world-famous musical

One of the most famous plays of all time is coming to Prince Albert, and the quest to fill the different roles begins this week. Starting on Wednesday night, the Broadway North Theatre Company is holding auditions for their production of Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show.

“We’re so excited,” said Roxanne Dicke, general manager of the EA Rawlinson Centre and the director of Rocky Horror Show. “It’s an incredible energy that comes from the people who come in to audition. There’s tireless commitment to doing something like that, especially over people’s summers. We know it’s a sacrifice in some ways.”

Auditions open up on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. Anyone auditioning will be required to prepare one contemporary song with a backing track and minute-long theatrical monologue, preferably from a comedy.

“We try to keep auditions very approachable with the team that is there auditioning people and make it a really positive learning experience as well,” Dicke said. “We’re all geared up and excited.”

Part of that excitement comes from the fame of the show they’re working on. The Rocky Horror Show debuted in 1973 and has been recreated and reproduced all over the world in the 50 years since.

“It’s really one of those cult classics that’s been around for many, many years, but lots of generations know it,” said Dicke. “Of course, it was made from a play into a film. So we are just excited to be able to do it on the actual stage and live for everybody.”

One of the things Dicke said she was most looking forward to was seeing how the casting shook out and which talented actor ends up where. One thing they won’t see much of at the casting, however, is actors under the age of 18. The nature of the script means they’re looking for adult actors.

“We want to create a safe space for the actors, cast, and crew,” Dicke said. “We want to make sure people feel comfortable in the rehearsal of it, and that means also feeling comfortable in the kind of content, being able to work on that content.”

Keeping the casting to adults doesn’t seem to have hurt their numbers, however. The openings for auditions quickly filled up.

“We have three evenings and then we added another session on Saturday,” said Dicke. “We’re full. We’re really excited to see how many people came out.”

Cast members are required to be available from August 8 through August 26 this summer.
