PARKLAND AMBULANCE

Paramedics responded to several chest pain calls this past weekend

Increased calls for chest pains highlighted a busy weekend for Parkland Ambulance paramedics.

As of Sunday night, paramedics had responded to over 100 incidents including several chest pain events, which landed these people in hospital for further care.

Lyle Karasiuk with Parkland Ambulance said it’s not uncommon for paramedics to respond to these calls on a daily basis, but this weekend was a blip in their call volume.

“When we start to see several of them in the case of this weekend, it’s just one of those anomalies,” he said.

Karasiuk couldn’t go into the specifics of the chest pain calls or what caused them as there is a range of reasons from pre-existing heart conditions or pain caused by hard labour.

Karasiuk said if you do feel a pain in your chest that moves to an arm or jaw and will not go away with rest, you should call 911 and follow paramedics’ instructions. Other symptoms you should be aware of include shortness of breath, dizziness or headache with chest pain, and nauseous feeling.

He added taking ASA (aspirin) is beneficial if you feel a heart ailment.

Paramedics also responded to a snowmobile incident in Candle Lake on Friday which sent one person to hospital in serious but stable condition.
