Byron Bear murder suspect committed for trial

Mar 4, 2023 | 12:00 PM

One of four men charged with the murder of Prince Albert’s Byron Bear, has been formally committed to be tried by judge and jury at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

Daniel Oliver’s preliminary inquiry hearing wrapped up Thursday afternoon at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Over the course of four days, dozens of witnesses were asked to appear and provide evidence that is protected by a publication ban.

On December 6, 2021, just after 4 a.m., police responded to a property on Third Avenue and Ninth Street East for a report of gunshots.

When officers arrived, they found evidence of a serious assault but no victim. Bear was reported missing that same day, and when interviewed by paNOW, his mom explained she spoke to her son earlier that morning. She indicated he made no mention what his plans were, nor if he was in any sort of trouble.

Bear’s remains were found by police on Feb. 10 near Hague.

All three of the co-accused have pending preliminary hearing dates.

Riley Primeau’s matters will be addressed on June 12; followed by Kyle Burns on June 27; and Raine Farrow’s on July 26.

No pleas have been entered at this stage. The purpose of the preliminary inquiry hearing will be to hear the Crown’s evidence, and the judge will make a decision on whether it’s sufficient enough to commit the case to trial.
