New apartment buildings in the works around P.A. hospital

The empty land around Prince Albert’s Victoria Hospital and the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse appears to be in high demand.

The city of P.A. and P.G. Broad Investment are working on a land transfer for five acres to create new apartment buildings in the area.

“We’re going to do three buildings which will include single-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments,” said Gary Brar, owner of P.G. Broad Investment.

The company is also in the process of creating a Holiday Inn in the Yard District. Combined, the two projects are expected to cost $70 million – $20 million for the hotel and $50 million for the apartment buildings.

Brar explains the idea to create the new apartments came about as they started work on the Holiday Inn.

“We couldn’t find proper accommodations for our own crew, so we thought this was a great opportunity,” he said.

The company recently conducted some geotechnical work and currently has some artist renderings. The hope is to see shovels officially break ground sometime this spring.

Meanwhile, there shouldn’t be too many concerns about finding people interested in living there as the apartments aren’t the only major development planned for the area.

Earlier this month, P.A.’s city council put their support behind a request from the First Nations University of Canada to build a new campus next to the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse.

This campus would allow the university to accommodate a minimum of 600 students, an increase from the 450 that the current school grounds in downtown P.A. can support.

The Métis Nation Saskatchewan (MNS) is also looking to build an office and child care centre in the area. MNS confirmed the interest in the project to paNOW and stated they plan on releasing more information in the near future.

P.A.’s council is set to discuss this project when they meet on Jan. 30 for an executive committee meeting.
