Former Raider Asst. Captain Guhle retires from pro hockey

Former Prince Albert Raiders’ defenseman and assistant captain Brendan Guhle has retired from pro hockey at the age of 25.

Guhle was playing for the Eisbären Berlin of the DEL (Deutsche Eishockey Liga) when he announced his retirement and, according to the team, it was something they weren’t expecting.

In a release, sporting director of Eisbären Berlin Stéphane Richer said that Guhle’s choice to retire came as a surprise to the entire organization.

The following has been translated from German to English:

“It was a shock when Brendan informed us of his decision,” he said in the release. “We were completely caught off guard by this one. After surviving his injury, he was an important part of our defence. Both the coaches, the team, and I tried to change his mind again. It will be difficult to replace him. We would like to state that Brendan’s decision is not related to his injury from the summer. Of course, we wish him all the best for the future.”

Brother of former Raider captain and 2019 WHL Champion Kaiden Guhle, Brenden spent four seasons in the WHL and played for the Raiders from 2013-2016 before being dealt to the Prince George Cougars in Nov. 2016. During his time in PA, Guhle managed 17 goals and 57 assists in 201 games.

In 2015, he was drafted in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft, 51st overall, by the Buffalo Sabres. He went on to appear in 23 regular-season games for the Sabres across three seasons while spending most of his time in their farm system playing for the AHL’s Rochester Americans.

In 2019, he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks where he split time in the NHL and in the AHL. This past off-season in the NHL saw Guhle sign in Europe with the Eisbären Berlin. He appeared in just seven games before announcing his retirement.

So far this season, the Eisbären sits in 13th in the DEL with a 6-3-2-14-2-4 record. (W-OTW-SOW-L-OTL-SOL)
