A man charged after a violent incident on New Year’s Day has received a four-year prison sentence.

Durwin Fenton Cook, 53, appeared Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Following the trial that was held last summer, he was found guilty of aggravated assault, and robbery.

On the evening of the incident at about 9 p.m., RCMP received a report of an assault at an RV park south of the City. After assaulting the victim with a hammer, Cook then stole the man’s car, and $40.

Cook had at one time been the subject of an arrest warrant. (Submitted photo/ RCMP)

The victim was later taken to hospital with injuries described as “serious but not life-threatening.” Cook was arrested eight days later.

According to evidence heard during the trial, the two men had known each other for a long time and even admitted to being friends.

While the motive for the attack was not perfectly clear, there were suggestions that both Cook and the victim had been using drugs.

With credit for time spent in remand custody, Cook has roughly two and a half years left to serve.

Upon his release from custody, he’ll be prohibited from owning or possessing any weapons for life and can have no contact with the victim.
