Local TKD club successful at Western Canadian championships

Students representing North Wake Martial Arts punched and kicked their way to the top this past weekend at the International TaeKwon-Do Federation Western Canadian Championships.

A total of seven people from the club competed in Lethbridge, including Head Instructor Lucian Phillips, and they won nine medals.

Lander Ibishi – Gold Sparring

Celina Jacobson – Silver Sparring

Erica Jacobson – Silver Sparring, Gold Special Techniques

Blayze Smith – Gold Patterns

Nickolai Roussow- Bronze Sparring

Jared Poirier- Gold Sparring, Gold Special techniques

Lucian Phillips- Gold Sparring

Phillips told paNOW he was very proud of each and every one of his students.

“Win or lose, they all showed tremendous spirit and sportsmanship,” he said.

Phillips also noted the two black belts, Jared and Nickolai both have aspirations to try and go further by competing at the nationals and earning a spot on the national team.

“Hopefully they will inspire some of my other students to do the same,” he said.

In total there were over 400 athletes registered at the competition.
