Ukrainians in P.A.

P.A. now home to over 100 Ukrainian newcomers

Sep 29, 2022 | 3:11 PM

-A previous version said all the adults were women. There are a couple men in Prince Albert as well.

More Ukrainian refugees are starting to call Prince Albert their new home.

Over 100 are now living in the city after fleeing from Ukraine, due to Russia’s invasion of the country back in February. More are still expected to come.

Of the refugees, 76 are adults and 28 are children.

Sonya Jahn, who’s looking after all the refugees, told paNOW all the adults have been able to find jobs.

“They have a strong work ethic and they’re happy to be working, being self-sufficient, and being able to provide for their families.”

Canadian Tire, Market Tire, Mr. Mikes, and MNP are just some of the businesses that have hired the city’s newcomers. Jahn noted that she continues to get calls from employers about potential job opportunities.

As for the children, all have been enrolled in school.

Jahn said the teachers, staff, and students have all been nothing but supportive.

“They’ve been so kind making the children feel welcomed and helping them settle in this new community.”

All the newcomers have also been able to find housing. Whether living alone, with their family, or with loved ones who have been living in the city since before the war.

“That’s been an issue in Saskatoon, but not in Prince Albert,” added Jahn.

Meanwhile, donations continue to be accepted.

Some of the bigger needs are personal hygiene items and used furniture.

The donations are being collected at MP Randy Hoback’s office, 79 11th St. W., Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. People are asked to call 306-953-8622 in advance.

Sophie’s Closet,” a location stocked with new or like new items for Ukrainian families, is holding an open house over the weekend.
