Chippy, defensive battle for Raiders’ Green and White game.

With one last chance to make an impression on the coaches and scouts before the exhibition games begin, the younger attendees of the Prince Albert Raiders main camp put on a defensive battle at the Art Hauser Centre for the annual Green and White game. In the end, White needed just two goals to secure the victory.

Luke Moroz and Carter McKay scored in the first and second period for White, while Alex Mack answered in the third for Green. The final shots were 25-22 for Green, with goaltender Connor Baumbach of White posting the only shutout of the day, stopping all 14 shots he faced.

Moroz opened the scoring on an awkward play at the side of the net as he tried to feather a pass to the back door for Oli Chenier. The pass was blocked, but it could hardly have worked out better for him.

“I was pretty surprised,” said Moroz. “I didn’t even mean to score, I kind of meant to go pass it back door and he tapped it into his own net.”

Although he only turned 15 years old in mid-July, Moroz was one of the more reliable scorers in camp. The first-round pick in the 2022 draft had been burying pucks all weekend, but his teams hadn’t had much luck otherwise until today.

“It feels amazing,” Moroz said. “It’s my first win of the weekend, so it feels good to get on the W side.”

Despite power plays each way, it was at even strength where White doubled their lead in the middle frame. With a heavy screen in front, defenseman Tyrone Sobry snapped a shot toward the goal that McKay got just a piece of to tip home.

Early in the third, things started to get nasty. There weren’t many Raiders returnees in the game, but one of them, Dallyn Peekeekoot, led the hit parade with a solid jolt on rookie Cole Peardon followed by a thunderous hit on Jessiah Bennett.

With Green trailing, they had their looks in the third period, but it took a strange bounce to finally get them on the board. Alex Mack got the last touch on the puck as his linemates drove the net from below the goal line before a White defenseman accidentally booted the puck into his own net.

From there, Green had enough time to work in the offensive zone with the net empty but some timely shot blocks and saves kept them from finding the sheet again. White held on for the 2-1 victory.

The next action for the Raiders will be Tuesday afternoon in Big River as they face the Saskatoon Blades to open up their exhibition schedule.
