Royals, Aces set for Provincial weekend

Another weekend for Saskatchewan baseball and softball Provincial Championships is set to begin Friday, with both the Prince Albert Royals and Aces ready for battle.

The U13AA and U18AA Royals, along with the U17A Aces will represent the city in their tournaments in hopes of bringing a title to P.A.

The U13AA Royals will head to Tier 1 Provincials in Maidstone while the U17A Aces will head south to Regina.

As for the U18AA Royals, they are heading to Macklin for Tier 3 Provincials.

Head coach Patrick Robin said he’s looking forward to the weekend and can’t wait to get playing.

“I’m very happy with the tier that we were put in,” he said. “We have a chance to win games and I expect that we will be playing on Sunday.”

The tournament consists of eight teams including P.A., the Meadow Lake Sox, Sask Five Giants, and the host Macklin Lakers. The Royals haven’t played these teams yet this season, however, Robin said that he’s not the least bit worried.

“We played in the Sask. Premier (Baseball) League and these teams weren’t a part of that,” he said. “We have no idea what these teams are going to bring. All the teams we’ve played this year are either tier one or two so we’re looking forward to it.”

For the U13AA Royals Provincials, they’ll meet with seven other teams including the Weyburn Beavers, Sask Five Giants, and the Humboldt Dodgers.

Finally, with the U17A Aces, 10 other teams will be fighting for the same prize featuring P.A., the Regina Fighting Saints, Southeast Sun Devils, and the Saskatoon Raiders and Phantoms. According to head coach Jenn Ferguson, the pool that they’ve been placed in will make for some good contests.

“All the teams in our pool are really evenly matched,” she said. “We’ll go down to Regina and we could go 0-4 or 4-0.”

All Provincial tournaments get underway on Friday.
