Former River Riders win gold at U18 Canada Cup

Three former Prince Albert Minor Football players are now national champions.

The U18 Football Canada Cup wrapped up over the weekend with Team Saskatchewan beating Team Alberta 13-1 in a nail-biting final.

Local players Taz Smith-Windsor, Scott Adamko, and Tyrell Mohr were a part of that provincial team that claimed the gold medal.

“It was a lot of hard work, a lot of early mornings, lots of two-day practices but just being there with the team and the coaches, it was a great atmosphere to be in,” said Smith-Windsor when recalling the experience.

“Even though it was tough, I’d do it again if I could.”

Linebacker Scott Adamko said the experience was unlike anything he has experienced as a player. He added that when the final seconds ticked off, there was nothing but jubilation from himself and his team.

“I was in utter shock; I couldn’t believe it. Once I saw those final seconds on the clock, it didn’t feel like real life.”

As for Smith-Windsor, he was laser-focused on finishing the game and didn’t celebrate until that final whistle blew and he knew the game was done.

“In the second half, Alberta was starting to gain some momentum and I was getting nervous, this thing isn’t put to bed yet. I was just really focused on finishing the game, stopping their offence and getting our offence back on the field.”

Both players will take some time off in the summer before getting right back onto the field for the fall.

“Main focus is my senior high school season,” said Smith-Windsor. “Camp starts in August and I’m looking forward to getting after it with my teammates.”

“I’m going to take the summer off and then I might do a couple of football camps,” said Adamko.
