Phone Scam

Shellbrook senior warns of phone scam pretending to be STARS Lottery

Jul 8, 2022 | 5:00 PM

One senior from Shellbrook is hoping to get the word out to others about a phone scam.

Phillip Wilson explains his brother-in-law received a call from what he thought was STARS Lottery with the individual on the phone wanting him to pick up a $350 credit card from the local Bigway Foods, claiming they would reimburse him for it.

“It sounded too good to be true so I went down to the store and talked to the store manager and is totally unaware and he said, good God don’t give them any personal information,” Wilson said.

Along with being reimbursed, the caller allegedly promised some big returns, including a vehicle and lots of money.

“And they would have a new Ford Bronco sitting in front of the Bigway and there was $250,000 too and so on and so forth,” added Wilson.

The household Wilson lives in is for elderly people and he knows that demographic is often the target of such scams.

“Heads up for the elderly, you know it sounds too good to be true and all it does is get my brother-in-law’s heart-ripping along here.”

Wilson states he found the call very suspicious and too good to be true when he was told about it, so he took some steps to verify what the person was saying.

On social media, STARS says they do not ask people for money to claim a prize and asks those who receive calls to document as many details as possible, such as the phone number and names so they can be given to the police.
