Ex-Raider Guhle wins second straight WHL championship

They may have come over 1,100 days apart, and with two different teams, but former Prince Albert Raider Kaiden Guhle has now won back-to-back WHL championships.

The 20-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta. scored the second of two goals for the Edmonton Oil Kings last night against the Seattle Thunderbirds to help them win game six of the Ed Chynoweth Cup. The Oil Kings took the game by a final score of 2-0.

Guhle spent two full seasons with the Raiders, and it was during his rookie season of 2018-19 that the team won the Ed Chynoweth Cup in dramatic fashion with a game 7 overtime win over the Vancouver Giants. In those playoffs, Guhle posted three assists in 23 games.

Now an older player and one of the top defensemen in the country, Guhle played a little more prominent of a role in his second championship. The stalwart blue liner posted eight goals and 16 points in 19 games while playing his usual punishing physical style.

That earned him playoff MVP honors and his eight goals led all defensemen in the playoffs.

Though his time with the Raiders was cut short in part by COVID-19, Guhle served as the team’s captain and was their leading scorer among defensemen.

His time as a Raider came to an end in a blockbuster trade to the Oil Kings. On December 1, 2021, the Raiders sent Guhle to Edmonton in exchange for forward Carson Latimer, defenseman Eric Johnston, the 13th overall pick in the 2021 prospects draft (which became forward Cole Peardon) and a first-round pick in 2023. The Oil Kings also sent over a sixth round pick in 2022 and a conditional third rounder in 2025.

The Oil Kings will now move on to represent the WHL at the Memorial Cup, just as the Raiders did in 2019. The Oil Kings were the last WHL team to win the national championship back in 2014.
