Preliminary hearing dates set in Broussie murder case

Later this fall, a judge will determine if the Crown’s evidence is strong enough for Francine Ballantyne to face trial.

The 28-year-old is facing a charge of second degree murder in the death of Doris Broussie last August. The 40-year-old woman was found at a business in the 3600 block of Second Avenue West.

Two days later she was declared deceased by medical staff at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

As per discussions heard Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court, the preliminary hearing will run Oct. 17 and Oct. 18. Also heard in court was that Ballantyne has hired Peter Abrametz Jr. to represent her in place of legal aid.

The relationship between the victim and the accused is unknown at this time, as well as the cause of death. There has been no plea entered as of yet.

According to Broussie’s obituary, she was living in Prince Albert at the time of the violent incident but was formerly from Black Lake.
