FSIN says federal budget a good start for Indigenous housing

Apr 8, 2022 | 10:18 AM

After the federal budget was announced yesterday, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) executive said it’s a positive start for investments into First Nations housing.

However, more is needed as they continue to advocate for more funding for Budget 2023

“First Nations people face obstacles non-First Nation people in Canada do not have to deal with. The Liberal government should be placing funding directly in the hands of First Nation communities to ensure their people have access to affordable housing” said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron. “With the climate change crisis also affecting First Nations people’s housing situations, including those who rely on ice roads to access building materials, the Federal Government’s commitment to the Treaty Right to Shelter continues to be non-negotiable. The proposed $4 billion investment is a start, and we will keep building upon it for the next federal budget.”

The Federation also said they’re committed to honouring the Treaties and the Treaty promises that were made more than a century ago.
