Raiders now four points back of playoff spot with loss to ICE, but Shilo continues scoring streak

The Prince Albert Raiders will come back home from a tough, three-in-three road trip in Manitoba empty-handed Despite playing desperate for points in the crunch time of the season, the Raiders lost all three games in regulation—5-2 to the Winnipeg ICE on Sunday, 6-2 to the ICE on Saturday and 5-3 to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday.

Also, both teams the Raiders are immediately chasing won their Sunday games. The Swift Current Broncos beat the Calgary Hitmen 3-0 and the Lethbridge Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-1.

The Raiders remain on 53 points through 61 games played, while the Broncos are in eighth with 57 points with 63 games played. The Hurricanes move back up to seventh place with 58 points through 60 games.

Although his team fell in the game, Raiders assistant coach Jeff Truitt said the effort was there against the top-ranked ICE.

“We had a lot more puck possession, a lot more cleaner plays out of our zone and some offensive zone time. It had a much better feel early on in this game. It gave us a chance. But this is tough, this is three-in-three and on the travel end of it, as well, Truitt said. “To come out and play this way in the third game, we’re happy with the guys. Of course, we’re disappointed with the loss, but you don’t know how much these guys have left in the tank.”

In Sunday’s game, the ICE came out and scored the first four goals of the game. They had a 3-0 advantage in the first period.

The Raiders got their goals from Carson Latimer late in the second period and Vladislav Shilo in the third. For Shilo, his goal was his second in as many games and extended his point-scoring streak to five games (four goals and five points).

“With Shilo, he’s finding his way in battle areas. He’s getting stronger, puck protection. This isn’t European hockey out here, guys are putting pressure on you and they’re physical,” Truitt said. “He’s adapting to this knowing he has strength and knowing he can do things with the puck.”
