Editor’s note: This story was amended to show Lukas Tamayo did in fact win his match. Previous information saying he lost was taken from the Boxing Saskatchewan website.

Boxing Saskatchewan’s Provincial Championships were held in Regina last weekend and three fighters from Prince Albert’s Red Wolf Club were on the card.

Cole Ahenakew fought in the 67 kg division and defeated Saskatoon’s Jaden Toye. Going into the fight, Ahenakew had nine bouts under his belt, while Toye had 16.

“I had fun during this fight,” Ahenakew told paNOW, recalling a feeling of being free while having his hand raised.

The Cree culture and ceremonies play a big role in Ahenakew’s pre-fight prep and he explained it always helps push him to be a better fighter and to be mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically ready for his fights. Reflecting back on his fight last weekend, Ahenakew said his cardio conditioning played a big role, and added he felt very calm against a great opponent.

“I learned a lot by fighting this fighter. I’m very thankful for the experience and very happy. Next goal is to keep winning and have fun winning,” he said.

Ahenakew expressed his gratitude to Metis Nation Saskatchewan president Glen McCallum for sponsoring him, as well as the Ahtahkakoop recreational department for their support.

“This boxing sport is not an easy sport. It takes a lot of discipline and dedication and requires a lot of training. I was lined up for a provincial bout and then they pulled out last minute then I won by walk over. Then my coach Braddock got me my first open fight and we got the win,” Ahenakew said.

In the 57 kg division, Luke Kalmikoff defeated Regina’s Franklin Moo.

For the 60 kg weight class, Lukas Tamayo defeated Faizan Dar from the Four Corner club in North Battleford.

The event was hosted by the Lonsdale Boxing Club and featured over a dozen fights with athletes from every corner of the province. Each fight consisted of three, three-minute rounds.
