The Prince Albert Northern Bears started their opening Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League playoff series with a defeat.
They were outgunned 7-3 on Saturday by the Saskatoon Stars at Merlis Belsher Place. The Bears were three goals down just 7:17 into the game before rookie sniper Julia Cey stopped the bleeding with a power-play goal. The Stars would go on to score two more in both remaining periods to run away with a 7-3 victory.
Defenders Jacquelyne Chief and Brooklin Fry scored for the Bears. Avery Bairos had a hat trick for the Stars, while Keyra Buziak had a five-point night, with a goal and four helpers. Peyton Gabruck and Sage Babey both had a goal and an assist, while Ireland Stein also scored for the Stars.
The Bears will have a chance to equalize the series on Sunday, as they host the Stars at 6:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
