Transport vehicle needed for woman who rescues dogs

Feb 11, 2022 | 9:32 AM

A Prince Albert woman is hoping to buy a new van that will help her continue to rescue dogs in the Prairies.

For the past year, Lindy Adams has volunteered her free time transporting dogs in her own vehicle to multiple animal rescues in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and B.C. to ensure they have a chance of finding a forever home. She also brings some communities dog food and other necessities.

Adams is currently using a jeep, which she said doesn’t hold many animals or supplies so she is hoping to buy a cargo van or a minivan to be able to transport more.

“A bigger vehicle would make it easier to complete our rescues and transport all the dogs that are needing help,” Adams told paNOW. “Basically, just my love of animals and dogs specifically and since getting into rescue I’ve noticed how many dogs need help and it’s nonstop all the time. I just want to help the dogs as much as I can just because I love them and want them to go to safe and happy homes.”

Adams has travelled as far as Flin Flon, Man., Airdrie, Alta., and most recently Golden, B.C. Some of the trips are 8 to 10 hours one way from Prince Albert and she’s making those types of trips usually once per week. Since November, she has visited seven rescues and transported 168 animals.

When asked if these trips come out of her own pocket, she said it depends as some dog rescues will help pay for gas, but most usually run off donations and fundraise themselves.

A friend of Adams’ has set up a GoFundMe to help her raise $10,000 to buy a van. The total currently sits at just over $2,600.

“Obviously we want one that’s reliable because we’re travelling up to 10 hours or a ways so definitely need something that’s going to be good for long distances,” she said.

She said she has relationships with most of the rescues she works with and knows they appreciate the work she does.

“A lot of people don’t realize that all of the dog rescue stuff is all volunteer and all donations. They don’t get any funding and stuff so that’s the hard part about doing it is just the funds to be able to save all the dogs,” she said. “That’s why we just are asking for some help to help us help the dogs.”
